I've recently realized that its not just infertile people who read infertility blogs. In light of that new information, I decided to make a list of some of the commonly used TTC abbreviations. If I've forgotten any, or if there is one thats confusing you put it in the comment section and I'll answer it and add it to the list. Kthanxbai!
AC - Assisted Conception
AF - Aunt Flow (period)
AI - Artificial Insemination
AID - Artificial Insemination with Donor sperm
AIH - Artificial Insemination with Husbands sperm
ART - Artificial Reproductive Technology
BABY DUST - Another term you wont find me using (unless sarcastically) Baby dust is something fertile people (or recently pregnant infertiles) try to bestow upon you when they are wishing you luck getting pregnant. It clearly does not work. While its always said with the best intentions, I find it HIGHLY annoying.
BETA - Blood pregnancy test.
BBT - Basal Body Temperature
BD - Baby Dancing (sexual intercourse) <------- you will NEVER see me use this term with any seriousness. I think its the most ridiculous thing!! But others do still use it, so I figured I'd throw it on here.
BFN - Big Fat Negative (pregnancy test)
BFP - Big Fat Positive (pregnancy test)
B/W - Blood work
CD - Cycle Day
CF - Cervical Fluid
DH - Dear Husband, Dear Heart, or as one of my friends thought....Dumb Husband. :)
CM - Cervical Mucous
DI - Donor Insemination
DPO - Days Past Ovulation
DPIUI - Days past Intra Uterine Insemination.
DPO5DT/DP3DT - Days past a 5 day transfer/ days past a three day transfer. Days past a five day transfer for explanation purposes, means it was transferred into the uterus 5 days after it was fertilized.
ER - Egg Retrieval
ET - Embryo Transfer
EW/EWCM - Egg White Cervical Mucous
FET - Frozen Embryo Transfer
FSH - Follicle Stimulating Hormone
GIFT - Gamete Intra Fallopian Transfer
HCG - human chorionic gonadotropin (pregnancy hormone)
HPT - Home Pregnancy Test
HSG - Hysterosalpingogram
ICSI - Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Insertion, aka where they shove the spazzy little sperm right into the egg.
IF - Infertility
IUI - Intra Uterine Insemination
IVF - In Vitro Fertilisation
LP - Luteal Phase
M/C - Miscarriage
O - Ovulation
OHSS - Ovarian Hyper Stimulation Syndrome
OI - Ovulation Induction
OPK - Ovulation Predictor Kit
PCOS - Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome
PG - Pregnant
POF - Premature Ovarian Failure
RE - Reproductive Endocrinologist. Aka the man or woman who will hopefully, finally manage to get you knocked up!
STICKY DUST - Right along the same lines of BABY DUST. This one however is used when recurrent pregnancy loss has happened or once you've moved on to IVF. Sticky dust is bestowed upon you in the hopes that the embryo sticks around. And once again, its used with the best intentions. But still annoys me. I guess I'm easily annoyed.
TMI - Too Much Information
Trigger - HCG injection to force ovulation
TTC - Trying To Conceive
U/S - Ultrasound
WTF appointment - This is the appointment you go to after trying at least 2 sometimes more than 4 unsuccessful IUI and before moving on to IVF where you basically look at your RE and say "What the fuck, doc?! WHY am I not pregnant!? And now what??"
2WW - Two Week Wait (Between ovulation and period due) Aka, two weeks of torture.
